- Performs specific functions, which will aid, correct or relieve the human eye and provided maximum vision, and comfort, such as examining the eye, analyzing ocular function, prescribing ophthalmic lenses, fitting contact lenses and advising ocular exercises, visual training or othoptics.
- Schedules and examine new patients who require refraction and refers cases to the Opthalmologist as required.
- Interviews patients and take a detailed history regarding visual problems and records same in the progress notes.
- Performs a functional examination of the affected eye(s) by measuring visual acuity, with and without the possible correction of any refraction error.
- Using the Opthalmoloscipe, inspects the interior of the eye(s) in order to visualize the optic disk, arteries, veins, retina, choroids and media.
- Checks the patient’s refractive error by using both an obejective method (retinoscopy) and a subjective method (patient’s response to changes in the lens) to measure refraction.
- Uses visual field screening to assess the eye(s) for any defects arising not only from glaucoma but also from neurological involvement of the optic nerve and visual pathways.
- Assists the Opthalmologist to prepare patients who require cataract surgery by doing:
- Keratometry reading – measures the anterior curvature of the cornea.
- A-B scan Operation – A – mode determines the axial length of the eye(s); B-mode procedures a two dimensional plane view of the eye(s).
- Assists both the Opthalmologist and the clinic nurse with any other duties as assigned within the Outpatient Clinic.
- Performs other related tasks and duties as assigned within the Outpatient clinic.
- Self-motivated and with awareness of current trends in the field.
- Ability to work in a multi-cultural environment.
