Job SummaryThe Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate and competitive cost estimates for construction projects, including materials, labor, equipment, and subcontractor services. This role involves analyzing project plans, specifications, and requirements to develop detailed bids and proposals. The ideal candidate is analytical, detail-oriented, and possesses strong knowledge of construction processes and cost management.
Key Responsibilities
Cost Estimation:
Review project plans, drawings, specifications, and other documents to prepare comprehensive cost estimates.
Calculate quantities of materials, labor hours, and equipment requirements based on project scope.
Identify and quantify potential risks, contingencies, and cost-saving opportunities.
Prepare detailed bid proposals, including breakdowns of costs for materials, labor, and subcontractors.
Vendor and Subcontractor Coordination:
Solicit and evaluate quotes from suppliers, subcontractors, and vendors to ensure competitive pricing.
Maintain relationships with vendors and subcontractors to secure favorable terms and pricing.
Negotiate pricing and scope with subcontractors to align with project requirements.
Project Analysis:
Conduct site visits and assessments to gather data for accurate estimating.
Analyze historical data, market trends, and project-specific factors to inform cost estimates.
Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and architects to clarify scope and resolve discrepancies.
Documentation and Reporting:
Prepare and present detailed cost reports, summaries, and bid packages for internal review and client submission.
Maintain organized records of estimates, assumptions, and supporting documentation.
Update estimates as project scopes change or new information becomes available.
Software and Tools:
Utilize estimating software (e.g., Bluebeam, ProEst, PlanSwift) and spreadsheets to develop and track estimates.
Leverage project management tools (e.g., Procore, MS Project) to align estimates with project schedules.
Qualifications
Education: Bachelor’s degree in construction management, civil engineering, quantity surveying, or related field preferred; equivalent experience considered.
Experience: 2+ years of experience in construction estimating or a related role.
Skills:
Strong analytical and mathematical skills with a keen attention to detail.
Proficiency in estimating software, Microsoft Excel, and project management tools.
Excellent communication and negotiation skills for interacting with clients, vendors, and internal teams.
Knowledge of construction methods, materials, and industry standards.
Ability to work under tight deadlines and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Certifications: Certification in estimating (e.g., Certified Professional Estimator (CPE), ASPE) is a plus.
Working Conditions
Primarily office-based with occasional site visits, which may involve exposure to construction environments.
May require occasional overtime to meet bid deadlines or project demands.
