Reports To: Facility/Operations Manager
Summary:
Responsible for the safe operation, inspection, preventive maintenance, and troubleshooting of standby and prime power generators to ensure an uninterrupted power supply.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Operate diesel/gas generators by standard operating procedures.
- Perform routine checks on fuel, oil, coolant, and battery systems.
- Monitor load, voltage, and frequency to ensure stable operation.
- Conduct scheduled preventive maintenance (oil/filter change, lubrication, cleaning).
- Troubleshoot alarms, starting issues, and performance faults.
- Maintain accurate logbooks, maintenance records, and spare parts inventory.
- Coordinate with external service providers for repairs or overhauls.
- Comply with all safety protocols and environmental regulations.
- Diploma/Certificate in Electrical, Mechanical, or related field.
- Experience in generator operation and maintenance (2+ years preferred).
- Knowledge of diesel engines, alternators, and electrical control panels.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work under pressure and respond to emergencies.
Daily Operation Checklist
1. Check fuel level, oil level, and coolant level.
2. Inspect battery connections and fluid level.
3. Ensure air filters and the exhaust area are clean.
4. Start the generator and warm up for 3–5 minutes.
5. Check control panel readings:
o Voltage output
o Frequency (Hz)
o Load (kW/kVA)
o Oil pressure & temperature
6. Record data in logbook.
7. Put the generator on load if parameters are normal.
8. During operation, monitor alarms and unusual noises.
9. After use, switch the generator to “no-load” for 3–5 minutes before shutdown.
10. Stop the generator and secure the system.
Weekly Maintenance
- Inspect belts, hoses, and the exhaust system.
- Clean air filter (replace if clogged).
- Check battery voltage with a multimeter.
- Test automatic transfer switch (ATS) functionality.
- Change oil and filters (or as per manufacturer’s schedule).
- Inspect coolant system (flush if required).
- Inspect alternator and electrical connections.
- Run the generator on a load test for at least 30 minutes.
- Never refuel while the generator is running.
- Always use PPE (gloves, ear protection, safety shoes).
- Keep a fire extinguisher nearby.
- Ensure the generator room/area is well-ventilated.
